Eagle Lake---California's Second Largest Lake The Perfect Tranquil Outdoor Getaway
By Carmel L. Mooney
Tahoe, Berryessa, Almanor, Folsom, Clear, Donner…Californians love their lakes and have a seemingly endless variety to choose from.
However, there is none other quite like naturally spring-fed Eagle Lake, part of the Great Basin, and one of the few lakes surviving since the ice age. One close look at this majestic recreation and vacation destination will reveal distinctions all can appreciate.
From an ecological standpoint, Eagle Lake is fascinating. It makes a home to hundreds of varieties of wild birds such as: Pelican, Bald Eagle, Hawk, Osprey, Duck, and Geese. What birds wouldn't appreciate more than 100 plant species including willow, pine, fir, cedar, oak, and countless others? The deer, antelope, coyote, rabbit, squirrel, and elk only add to the natural beauty of the largely undiscovered area.
Even more unique is that as a result of Eagle Lake's highly alkaline water, it supports its own special species of trout. Experienced anglers claim Eagle Lake Trout to be the tastiest red-meat fish around.
The average trout caught at Eagle Lake is about three pounds with the occasional six, eight, or ten pounder lunker.
The second largest lake in California offers fantastic swimming, boating, camping, kayaking, biking, water-skiing, and sail boating in a tranquil setting---a cool respite from the valley heat of nearby Susanville, Redding, and Chico.
With over 100 miles of windswept shoreline, and five campgrounds, there's plenty of peaceful area for relaxing lakeside, whatever pastime you choose.
I highly recommend the Spaulding area of the lake, complete with a nice 4,600 foot airstrip, perfect for a fly-in.
This side of the lake offers a great lodging possibility right across from the runway and next to the Lakeview Inn Restaurant where 20 units are available at the quaint but thoroughly modern inn, for quite reasonable vacation prices. From there, you can even order a private massage or set up a private fishing guide.
Overlooking the lake, this location offers the best of all the lake has to offer. The food at the restaurant is deliciously prepared with special care reflected in the mouthwatering from-scratch sauces. Famous for their prawns, scampi, prime rib and chicken fried steak, locals and visitors come from miles around to enjoy the relaxed yet elegant atmosphere of the Lakeview Inn where the service is friendly and live musical entertainment only adds to the fun on the weekends.
If a peaceful, tranquil outdoor getaway is your plan, Eagle Lake has it all.
